MMH Playroom works

Esther's report on one of the children that comes to the playroom. Mercy is a 5 year old girl that is admitted with burns; “mercy has greatly improved. She is in the hospital since last year December. She enjoys playing with the musical toys, puppets, and dollies. Apart from playing Mercy also learns, she now knows all the shapes, numbers, and letters. She is able to identify and master everything that I've taught her. Most of the nurses are impressed with her performance despite being bed ridden. Playing has also encouraged Mercy in a lot of things especially with her speech and exercising her muscles and brain. She has started standing now and trying to walk. The nurses now allow her to go to the playroom. The first time she was anxious and smiling a lot which is good for her. Now that she goes to the playroom the mother is happy and positive now that her daughter is fine”.

Play room at Macha Mission Hospital Officially Opened

On Monday, 14 January 2008 the playroom at Macha Hospital was officially openend. Ms Esther Mukupa is the playroom assistant and doing a great job at that as well as being the master of ceremony during the opening. Speeches from Mr. Abram Mhango (Manager of Clinical Care) and Mrs. Jinaina (nurse in charge of pediatric ward) were well received. Gratitude was expressed to Jolanda and Esther (former short term nurses at Macha) who took up the idea of having a playroom and made it come to pass by making funds available. Also the work well done by the Ubuntu builders, the cooperation with nursing staff and hospital management was commented on. Mwaka, Hope and Merel took care of the entertainment and after the ribbon was cut the playroom was opened for the first target group!

Medicine in the Tropics

Medicine in the Tropics, Rotation Report, by Kevin Driver
Macha Mission Hospital, Macha, Zambia
March - April 2007

Macha Mission Hospital
When looking for a site to rotate through for my tropical medicine elective, there were several features that drew me to Macha.  I was looking for a place where I could fully experience medicine as practiced in the tropics, somewhere with the resources to diagnose and treat common diseases but limited enough to be authentic to the setting of a developing country and a place for me to hone my clinical skills.  I also looked for a hospital that would be open and oriented to medical students, so that I would have ample support and supervision, but also be able to practice with autonomy and thus really be a benefit to a medically underserved community.  I feel that Macha fit all of these expectations.

Introducing SmartCare

Dear Gertjan, the Macha Community, and ‘Linknet’,

After about a year’s discussion and reflection, the development team and initial partners appear to have reached a consensus on a new name: the SmartCare system, for the portable EMR system formerly known as CCPTS (Continuity of Care and Patient Tracking System).

This posting contains basic information on electives at Macha Hospital.

Report on PHC and OPD

Primary Health Care (PHC) is an approach to make essential health care easily accessible to all individuals and families in the community by means acceptable to them, through their full participation, and at a cost they can afford.

Personnel at the primary level of health care work at a primary level facility or in the community.

Hospital Affiliated Health Center (HAHC) is a health center that, although located next to the hospital, is not a part of the hospital itself. It consists of the Primary Health Care center (PHC) and the Out Patient Department (OPD). This report is about the HAHC-activities at OPD.
