Zambia Enrolled Nurse’s training school (ZEN)

Macha enrolled nurse’s training school is one of the departments under Macha Mission Hospital, opened in 1967.

The school has government approval to recruit twenty-five (25) students per year. The training programme is divided into four (4) terms.

The school philosophy of care is to attain Excellency with 100% PASS RATE, secondary the school seeks to graduate compassionate and caring nurses.

Its main function is to train students to be enrolled nurses for service throughout the country. The school offers a two-year certificate course for enrolled nurses. The school enrolls twenty five to thirty students annually. The school receives applications from all over the country and the student body comprises of young ladies and gentlemen from different places within Zambia.

The school is head by the Education manager who reports direct to the executive Director.

Then follows the Senior tutor who is the deputy to the Education manager.

The tutors and clinical teachers.

The secretary does most of the paper work and is involved in the processing of application letters.

On the ground is the hostel matron who supervises cooks and cleaners.

OBJECTIVES OF THE SCHOOL

  • To attend to all welfare of the students.

  • To maintain the students pass rate of 100% in the year 2003.

  • To keep the school buildings and its surroundings in a hygienic and habitable standards throughout 2003

  • To provide a safe environment for students, school materials and buildings all year round.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • The school was able to provide food and beverages for the students.

  • The school was able to give a balanced diet to the students.

  • The school achieved a 100% pass rate in the year 2002.

  • The school was able to maintain a clean environment.

  • The school managed to buy a computer in the year 2001.

CONSTRAINTS

  • Shortage of tutors and registered nurses at the school and Hospital to help with the student’s practical experience.

  • The school has two Zambia tutors and one volunteer. One clinical teacher, the minimum requirement for tutors for the school with fifty students is four (4) plus one (1) tutor in charge and two clinical instructors or teachers.

  • The school has been unable to pay the student’s stay pens regularly because of the government grant, which comes two-three months behind and in reduced amount.

  • The school is finding it difficult to process exams because of inadequate printing facilities.

  • The school is unable to procure new uniforms for the students both males and females, because of erratic funds and non-availability of materials.

  • The school would want to have water supply of its own, as this has been a problem for long time. Water supply is shared between the school and hospital.

  • The school has no Librarian because of inadequate funds to pay the librarian and hence books are kept in tutor’s offices.

  • The school was not able to buy all the teaching materials it had planned for and was not able to buy sports jerseys for students.

  • Fundamental of nursing II.

  • Pediatric nursing I.

  • Medical nursing I.

  • Pharmacology for nurses.

Third six months:

  • Surgical nursing I.

  • Medical nursing II.

  • Pediatric nursing II.

  • Fundamental for nursing cont.

  • Mental Health nursing.

  • Psychology for nurses.

  • Theatre nursing.

  • Obstetrics and Gynecologic nursing.

  • Ophthalmology

Fourth six months:

  • Tropical Medicine.

  • Management.

  • STI/Dermatology.

66 weeks of practical.

ENROLLMENT OF STUDENTS

Enrollment of students starts with aspiring candidates making applications to the school specifying their qualifications. The school authority does short listing.

Those who meet the qualifications are sent forms, which they have to fill in and send them back to the school. Then candidates are invited for aptitude tests conducted by Ministry of Labor in Lusaka. Those who pass this test are invited for a final selection test conducted by the school and human resource committee of Macha Mission Hospital. Final selection of students is done according to the candidates performance in the aptitude test offered by the school and the strength of grade twelve certificate.

Those selected are sent acceptance letters specifying school requirements.
